While Barack Obama is far and away the most successful presidential fundraiser ever, he is (to nobody’s surprise) lagging far behind John McCain in raising campaign funds on the Vero Beach barrier island.
But both candidates have already raised far more money in zip code 32963 than the totals amassed in any previous presidential campaign.
During July, the most recent month for which data is available, McCain raised $44,916 on the barrier island - more than ten times the anemic $4,300 raised by Obama, according to Federal Election Commission records.
The sums brought the total funds raised by McCain in zip code 32963 to $374,216, dwarfing the $86,700 raised on the island by the Democratic presidential candidate.
But while Obama may not be having the success of McCain on the overwhelmingly Republican barrier island, he is doing far better than any of his predecessors. The Democratic nominee in 2004, John Kerry, only succeeded in raising $16,100, and the 2004 nominee, Vice President Al Gore, raised a total of $4,970.
McCain's total also will wind up far ahead of fundraising efforts here by President Bush. The President raised $222,215 for his re-election effort in 2004, and only $84,150 for his initial presidential run in 2000.
