Meet the Artist Series at Museum Gets Underway With Mark Koven

by Karen D. Kelly, correspondent
Art patrons on June 29th had an opportunity to meet multimedia artist Mark Koven at the first in a series of four Sunday “Meet the Artist” programs being offered this summer at the Vero Beach Museum of Art.

Koven was this month’s featured artist in the Florida Fellowship Visual Art Exhibition currently on display at the museum. Two of his 3-D animated lenticular photographs, which were the focus of his presentation on Sunday, are currently on display at the museum.

Koven described the process he went through in creating these fascinating interactive pieces of art, explaining that “lenticular is just a fancy word for photographs stacked upon each other and has a motion or 3-D effect.”

To enjoy the full effect of these animated photographs, the viewer must move back and forth to see the movement in the image. The two photographs featured in the exhibit are from Koven’s “Female Gape” series, which animate a yawn as viewers walk past them.

“In both reacting to the viewer and causing an action in the viewer, the 3-D images elicit both a voluntary and involuntary physical response,” Koven said. As if on cue, several of those viewing the images couldn’t help but yawn!

Cynci Cutter and Lisa Angell, both of Vero Beach, were among those who enjoyed the afternoon presentation. Lisa said it was her third time viewing the exhibit. “The first time I came I was fascinated and I wanted to hear and meet the artist today. I was very impressed with him. He is wonderful.”

The next artist featured in the exhibition will be Wendy Wischer. This presentation will be held on Sunday, July 27 th at 3 p.m. at the Vero Beach Museum of Art. The program is free to the public; however you are encouraged to RSVP by calling (772) 231-0707 ext. 136.
