Reed L. McJunkin, 99

Reed L. McJunkin, 99, of Vero Beach died on August 10th.

McJunkin was born on December 6, 1908 in Manila, Philippines to Ethel McJunkin and Norman McJunkin. He grew up in New Rochelle, NY and graduated from Cornell University School of Engineering in 1932. In 1938, he married Eleanor Frances McDonald and resided in Cortland, NY.

McJunkin was a distinguished philanthropist, serving as the President of the JM McDonald Foundation, as well as donating time and money to several other charitable organizations throughout the eastern United States.

While in New York he was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, member of the Exchange Club, served on the Cortland Water Board, owned and operated the Cortland Vault Company and the Sanders Archery Equipment Company, and raised championship Guernsey cattle in the Cortland area.

McJunkin was a part-time resident of Vero Beach from 1975 and became a full- time resident a decade later. An avid golfer who loved to travel, he climbed Machu Picchu at the age of 75 and hit a hole-in-one on his favorite golf course in Vero Beach at the age of 91.

McJunkin was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Eleanor Frances McJunkin. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy (Ted) Palmer of Manilus, NY; daughter, Janet (Charlie) Stanton of Vero Beach, FL; son, Don (Jackie) McJunkin of Evergreen, CO; and sister Marjorie Russell of Cortland, NY.

A graveside service will be held September 25, 2008 at 11:00 in the Cortland Rural Cemetery, Cortland, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960 or to the United Presbyterian Church, 25 Church St., Cortland, NY 13045 in the memory of Reed McJunkin.
